2012 Rule and Known Sequence Proposals

November 1st, 2011

IAC Logo Proposals are out for 2012 rules changes and known sequences.

There are 4 proposals for the ’12 Sportsman Known sequence, and 5 proposals for the ’12 Intermediate sequence.

Two proposed rule changes that would affect a number of our members:

  1. Add 500 ft. to the top of the box for Primary and Sportsman sequences.
  2. Require the first figure in the Primary known to be flown into the wind.

There are a couple other rule changes that may pique your interest as well:

  1. Specify a methodology for downgrading a change in radius for looping lines.
  2. Optionally removes the requirement for a competitor to wear a parachute if flying
an aircraft with a ballistic recovery system.

The proposed knowns are interesting as well.  For those of you who flew the Sportsman in 2011, you remember there were two figures with 45 deg lines in the same line on the X axis.

This resulted in a number of competitors either taking a break or being penalized for an out on the upwind side of the box.

One of the proposed Sportsman knowns removes this characteristic of the sequence. There may be disadvantages as well.

EAA has a forum set up to officially comment on both the proposed sequences and rule changes.  Take a look at the proposals in the discussion on the Unusual Attitudes forum by clicking on this link:  Proposed Knowns and Rules for 2012

You may read many of the constructive comments on that thread, and provide your feedback in that forum as well.

Note: The Unusual Attitudes Forum will be the ONLY place for members to make official comment on these proposed rules and knowns.

Harold Neumann Chili Dog Fly In

August 30th, 2011

Fifth Annual Once Every So Often Harold Neumann Memorial Chili Dog Fly-In

A long, long, time ago there were many fly-in’s throughout the year in the Kansas City area.  The Kansas City Chapter of the Antique Airplane Association, in addition to their annual fly-in at either Lawrence Municipal Airport or at the Atchison Kansas Airport, would host the occasional impromptu breakfast fly-in at the now gone (heavy sigh) Mission Road Airport.

EAA Chapter 91 would hold their annual fly-in at either Excelsior Springs Airport or the East Kansas City Airport in Grain Valley, MO.

IAC Chapter 15, The Kansas City Aerobatic Club, would hold their annual 4-category aerobatic love-fest at the Ottawa Kansas Airport.

EAA Chapter 200, “The Sunflower Chapter”, would serve pancakes several times a year at Gardner Municipal.  However, the last fly-in of the year was always held at Harold Neumann’s private strip near Olathe, KS.  This fly-in was strictly a word of mouth affair that drew 20 to 25 experimental and antique/classic airplanes to Harold’s strip in late October or early November.

On that Sunday afternoon we would gather around a fire built from creosote soaked railroad ties, roasting hotdogs, eating home-made chili and enjoying the fellowship of our fellow aviators, all the while trying to stay warm!!  It has been quite some time now since we lost Harold and even more time since there was an end of season fly-in at Harold’s strip.  Well, we cannot go back to “Neumann (Pvt.)” but we can honor Harold’s memory with the Fifth Annual Once Every So Often Harold Neumann Memorial Chili Dog Fly-In!

This event will take place on Saturday, October 15th at the Gardner Kansas Municipal Airport (K34), “The Best Little Airport In Kansas”.

With chili, hotdogs and drinks provided by EAA Vintage Aircraft Chapter 16 (side dish or dessert appreciated, but not required), we will gather at noon in the outdoor pavilion and stay and swap lies about our aviation prowess and speak to our memories of Harold until we can no longer stand each other.

If you have any questions about this event, or want to donate a pot of chili, please call Bob Gandy at 913-634-8617 or email skyblzr@att.net.  Please put “Harold Neumann Fly-In” in the subject line as I don’t answer all the offers I receive to represent someone from Nigeria in regards to their financial issues . . . . .

We look forward to seeing all of you at K34 in October.

Gearing up for the Barnstormer

August 17th, 2011

Preparations are coming to a head for the 2011 Barnstormer.

Box markers will be set out on Saturday, August 20th.  We’ll meet at Signature Flight Support at KIXD around 8am and head out to the infield shortly after that.

There’s gonna be some flyin’.

The box will be open after the markers are set, and anyone wanting to get a sneak peak at the box is welcome to join us.

You’ll need to review the waiver and sign the box use form prior to participating.

If you can volunteer for the Barnstormer, your help is greatly needed and appreciated.  Register online if you plan to compete OR volunteer.  This gives us a heads up on how many volunteers we have, as well as how many mouths to feed at the banquet!

Got Water?

We’re in need of donated bottled water!  If you find bottled water on sale and can make a donation to the contest, pick up a case (or two!) and bring it to the contest.

Unwind with a movie.

After the flying is done for the day, join EAA Chapter 200 for a showing of Island in the Sky, staring John Wayne as Captain Dooley at the Gardner Airport.  More details here.

July Breakfast/Play Day and a Few Reminders

July 8th, 2011

IAC 15 is planning a pancake/omelet breakfast and play day for Saturday, July 30th.

The plan is to start cooking at 7am with the box opening at New Century at 8am.  Breakfast will be free to anyone, including our CAF and EAA friends, and friends in aviation in general.

Please post a comment or send Grant an email if you plan on joining us.

A few reminders for July:

  • The CAF is still looking for volunteers to help at their annual fly-in on the 16th.  Thanks to all those that signed up at our last meeting.
  • July’s meeting will be held on the 18th at Signature Flight Support, Downtown (KMKC).  We’ll be finalizing some of the contest details, and will need the support of our members to bring our annual contest to fruition.
