Aces High Contest

August 21st, 2017

Hello everyone. Just a note to remind you of the Aces High contest at Newton Ks.(KEWK) on September 9th & 10th.
I got the following note from David Marten, contest director:

Are you ware of any IAC 15 pilots heading to Newton, KS for our 2017 ACE’s High Contest? With the pre-registration system down we’re having trouble getting decent estimates on how many pilots are competing.
2017 will be a Power-only contest as the USAFA Glider Team is not attending this year.
I’d appreciate your ‘best-guess’ and ask your members to please RSVP to or give me a call at 605-390-8044
We’re also looking for another Judge. If any of your guys are interested we’ll reimburse lodging expenses.

Dave Marten
IAC 119 President / Contest Director

Anyone planning to participate or who could help with the contest, give please give David a call or send him a note.

The next IAC15 meeting will be September 25th.

IAC15 President

Playday Reminder

July 20th, 2017

Hello everyone. Just a note to remind you of the play day at IXD, New Century Air Service FBO on the East side of the airport; this Saturday, the 22nd of July. The airspace NOTAM is published for 8am to 6pm. I’d like to get response from those who might be interested in flying so I can plan accordingly. It’s forecast to be the hottest day of the year so an early show for flying would probably be in order. So, please respond if you plan to attend Saturday.

March 27 Meeting Minutes

April 1st, 2017

The club held a general meeting on March 27, 2017 at Signature Flight Support at KIXD.

Those in attendance were: Grant Wittenborn, Dave Maine, Nan Funkhouser, Bev Wittenborn, Jon Daughty, Paul Holland, and Paul Thomson.

Dave reported that the club has $10,228.85 in the club account.  The 2016 IRS filing is complete, and the Kansas state filings are not due again until 2018.

Dave reported on the hangar and airplane damage caused by the storms on March 6th.  His airplane was flipped upside down as a result of the storm resulting in significant damage.  The insurance representative deemed the airplane a total loss.  He summarized the process of handling insurance, and that he is in the market for a new Pitts.  He has a lead on one in Virginia and potentially one other lead.

Paul Thomson discussed an issue with his Super Decathlon while pulling the airplane out of the hangar.  He heard the sound of metal rubbing against metal in the wing.  Upon further investigation, he found that a weld in the lower portion of the wing rib had failed, causing the two adjacent pieces of aluminum structure to rub against each other.

Paul  Holland discussed various operational considerations of our waivered airspace.  Generally there have been few issues in the past.  The group discussed other topics, like land and hold short instructions, line up and wait limitations, and clearances issued to airplanes that have just landed and been issued a 180 turn on the runway and taxiback.  Taxiing aircraft are expected to hold short of crossing runways unless cleared across the runway after turning around on the landing runway.  Paul reminded the group that the tower does not have access to radar, and that the airspace directly south of the airport over Hillsdale lake tends to become congested and creates issues with airplanes shooting ILS approaches to runway 36.

The club has no plans for a 2017 contest at New Century AirCenter.

There is interest in playdays this spring/summer, but no formal schedule was defined.

The club reviewed the regional events on the calendar for 2017.

The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for June 26th.  More details/updates to come.

The meeting was adjourned.

IAC15 March Meeting

March 2nd, 2017

Hello everyone. I’d like to have an IAC Chapter 15 meeting this month on Monday the 27th at Signature FBO to discuss scheduling Summer play days, club gatherings and cookouts as well as the aerobatic box and flight procedures. Paul Holland, the IXD tower chief, indicated he would be available most anytime this month and would be included in our discussion. I’d like to have an idea of how many can attend the meeting before Paul commits to attending. If you would please respond to this query I’d appreciate it very much. You can respond by e-mailing me at

Best regards:

John Wittenborn, IAC15 President
